In September 2009 Lero – the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, CIO Ireland and IT Tallaght teamed up with the Irish Computer Society to distribute a brand new exciting transition year module to all secondary schools in the country. The materials “Having Fun with Computer Programming and Games” use Scratch, a free software tool developed by the MIT Media Lab to teach programming concepts. Jessie Byrne teaches computer studies and geography at second level. She is an ICT-in-education enthusiast (especially when the software’s free!).Clare McInerney runs the Education and Outreach Programme in Lero – the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre. She is based in the University of Limerick.
